There are two ways in which to make your vehicle legal so that you can drive in a low emission zone. You can retrofit a particulate filer or apply for an exemption from current regulations.

Retrofitting particulate filters

Danish vans
Please contact a car workshop if you want to retrofit your vehicle with a particulate filter. When the filter is mounted, it must be registered by a vehicle inspection facility. At the vehicle inspection facility the filter is tested and the inspection facility takes care of registering the filter in the Danish motor register (DMR).

For Danish lorries and busses only: Before the declaration from the filter supplier is presented at the vehicle inspection facility, the declaration must be emailed to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency at miljozoner@mst.dk. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency will then assign an identification number, which the owner or user must affix to the declaration.

Non-Danish vehicles
Drivers of non-Danish vehicles that are first registered before the date limit are required to register their vehicle, along with the appropriate documentation of retrofitted particulate filter or euronorm to enter a low emission zone. If you fail to register your vehicle, along with the appropriate documentation, you will risk a fined of DKK 1.000.

You must register your vehicle no later than the day you enter the low emission zone.

When do I need to register a non-Danish van?

If you drive a non-Danish van, which was first registered BEFORE 1 January 2007, you must register your vehicle along with documentation showing retrofitted particulate filter and/or euronorm.

When do I need to register a non-Danish lorry or a bus?

If you drive a non-Danish heavy vehicle, lorry or bus, which was first registered BEFORE 1 October 2009, you must register your vehicle along with documentation showing retrofitted particulate filter and/or euronorm.

Exemption

As under the current low emission zone regulations, it will still be possible – in special cases – to get an exemption from the regulations.

It is only possible to get an exemption for a shorter time-limited period. You can read more about the special circumstances an exemption is granted and find the application on The Danish Environmental Protection Agency’ website.
