The regulations apply to all diesel vans irrespective of the colour of their number plate. Passenger cars are not affected by the low emission regulations.

The regulations for driving a van in low emission zones are divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1: From 1 July 2020
Vans must be registered on or later than 1 January 2007 to drive within low emission zones.
  • Phase 2: From 2 July 2022
Vans must be registered on or later than 1 January 2012 to drive within low emission zones.
  • Phase 3: From 1 July 2025
Vans must be registered on or later than 1 September 2016 to drive within low emission zones.

If your vehicle does not meet the three phased-in requirements, it can be retrofitted with a particulate filter.

Exceptions for vehicular traffic

The regulations in the low emission zones do not apply to:

  • Vehicles registered in Denmark for veteran driving
  • Vehicles registered abroad that are more than 30 years old
  • Vehicles used by the armed forces, the police or other emergency services when there is an exceptional need to use the vehicle in a low emission zone. It is, however, a condition that the vehicle does not usually drive in the low emission zone.
  • Vehicles used by the armed forces, the police or other emergency services when such vehicles are used in connection with emergency preparedness exercises within a low emission zone
