Do I need to register my non-danish passenger car?

From 1st October 2023, if you own a diesel-powered passenger car with a first registration date before 1st January 2011, you need to register the vehicle with documentation for particulate filter/Euro 5 in order to drive legally in the low emission zones and avoid receiving fixed-penalty notices. You can read more about how to register your car and the required documentation here.

Does my car need to have a particulate filter to be able to drive legally in the low emission zones?

Your diesel-powered car must have a particulate filter in order to be able to drive legally in the low emission zones. The particulate filter requirement is met in case your passenger car is at least Euro 5 or has a particulate filter fitted.

In the Danish Register of Motor Vehicles (DMR) is it possible for owners of Danish vehicles to see the Euro standard of your car or whether it has a particulate filter fitted. For non-Danish vehicles, the information will often appear on the registration certificate or in the respective country's vehicle register.

If your car is registered for veteran driving in the Vehicle Register, it is exempt from the particulate filter requirement in the low emission zones.

See if your car meets the new environmental requirements by entering your license plate at www.miljoezoner.dk.

Why does my car need a particulate filter?

The new environmental requirements for diesel-powered cars are to help ensure cleaner air in the major cities.

Is the particulate filter of my vehicle registered incorrectly?

You can check whether your vehicle has a particulate filter fitted by looking up your license plate in the Vehicle Register.

If your vehicle has a factory-fitted filter that is not properly registered, you can get it registered by taking it for an inspection. If your vehicle has a retrofitted particulate filter that is not properly registered, you must have it registered by taking it for an inspection. You will have to bring the correct documentation in connection with the inspection. You can read more on the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s website.

Owners of diesel-powered cars with particulate filters that have been registered in the Vehicle Register are exempt from paying the annual particulate emission tax. Please direct any questions regarding payment of particulate emission tax to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency.

How much does a particulate filter cost?

The price of a particulate filter and the installation of a filter depends on the car you have, and the particulate filter and the workshop you choose.

Does it have to be a specific particulate filter?

See whether your vehicle can get an approved particulate filter here.

The particulate filter must be approved for your specific car model. You can read more about approved particulate filters on the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s website.

A retrofitted particulate filter must be approved by way of inspection, after which it will become registered in the Vehicle Register. The vehicle will then comply with the low emission zone regulations. You can read more about inspections on the Danish Road Traffic Authority’s website.

What do I save in taxes by getting a particulate filter?

If your diesel-powered car gets an approved particulate filter, you will save DKK 1,000 in tax annually, as the particulate emission tax does not have to be paid. You can read more about vehicle taxes here.

What do I do if my car cannot get a particulate filter?

See whether your vehicle can get an approved particulate filter here.

Can your car, which is used privately, not have a particulate filter retrofitted, you can register an exemption in the following situations:

  • You were resident in a low emission zone before the car became subject to the low emission zone regulations.
  • You or a close family member have been referred for treatment at a hospital or by a medical specialist within a low emission zone.
  • You have nighttime work in a low emission zone.
  • You own a vehicle for the disabled.
  • Six entries to low emission zones for up to 12 months after your car became subject to the low emission zone regulations.

In special cases, cars registered for business can obtain a dispensation if:

  • retrofitting the filter is technically impossible or
  • special conditions of the car dictate it and
  • other circumstances speak for it, including the fact that a dispensation will be of secondary importance for the environment and health.

The fact that there is no pre-approved particle filter is not sufficient to obtain an dispensation.

Does my camper also need a particulate filter?

Campers:

A diesel-powered camper with nine seats or less including the driver’s seat is defined as a passenger car, and therefore must comply with the low emission zone rules as of 1st October 2023.

To drive legally in the low emission zones, the camper must have a particulate filter or be at least Euro 5.

Non-danish campers with a first registration date before 1st January 2011 with nine seats or less including the driver, need to register the vehicle after 1st October 2023 with documentation for particulate filter/Euro 5 in order to drive legally in the low emission zones and avoid receiving fixed-penalty notices. You can read more about how to register your car and the required documentation here.

Campers above 3.5 tons:

If your diesel-powered camper weighs over 3.5 tons and have more than nine seats including the driver, it is defined as a bus and is already included in the low emission zones rules.

Non-danish campers with a first registration date before 1st January 2015 which weighs over 3.5 tons with more than nine seats including the driver, need to register the vehicle with documentation for particulate filter/Euro VI in order to drive legally in the low emission zones and avoid receiving fixed-penalty notices.
